But I did find the cause and solution… I opened Microsoft Security Essentials, and clicked on the "Settings" tab. The Windows Update process was the culprit for me - and simply disabling it did the trick (no more 100% CPU). Bring up task manager under these conditions was a feat in itself. Investigating the issue, I noticed that a SVCHOST.EXE process was eating up all the CPU.

Following the advice has rejuvenated my 8+ year old vista pc. Originally, Microsoft's free, consumer product, Security Essentials, would stop working to provide antimalware updates for Windows XP on the same day support for the operating system ended. How did Microsoft let this happen? I am really hoping this will solve the nagging problem I have been having with my laptop. Whenever I want to install a new program or uninstall a program I get an error message that another install is in progress. Microsoft has recognized this problem and has released a patch. Thank you for all that you do. Sometimes even trying to click the file in Explorer would cause an error and Windows to say it didn't want to play the file.
Thanks!!!! The solution was to use System Monitor to stop and restart wuauserv when the W10 installer would hang during the update part of the installation.
